Most shops won't repair cracks longer than 6 inches because insurance companies set this arbitrary "standard". Insurance companies will not generally pay for windshield crack repairs if the damage is longer than 6 inches. Reputable and skilled windshield repair specialists can repair windshield cracks up to 24 inches. We do it all the time. I would argue with the recommendation to use a DIY kit. Repairing a cracked windshield isn't rocket science, but it takes experience to do it right.
